In the early 70s NHRA had a class called A/Fuel Dragster (A/FD). It was a class for Fuel Injected single engine NitroMethane fueled dragsters with a weight break of 3.0 pounds per cube (without the driver). The cars ran in NHRA's Competition Eliminator which featured handicap starts based on the current national performance records.
These cars were always a fan favorite because they brought the unique sound, power and speed of NitroMethane to Comp Eliminator allowing fans to see Nitro cars at a local level of racing.
Injected Nitromethane powered cars and racing have changed dramatically over the years. The cars are rear-engine and have gotten considerably faster and more powerful. The excitement of Nitro racing is still there, but the number of cars has decreased due to the increased time, effort and funding required.
While Injected Nitro cars can still be seen at most large national meets, they are relatively rare at a local level. They have become what is essentially a professional class of racing, costing hundreds of thousands of dollars and requiring thousands of hours of effort to compete annually.
We believe that the Injected Nitro class (as it was in the early 70s) should be restored to NHRA's Competition Eliminator because:
- It would bring the excitement of Nitro racing back to Competition eliminator.
- It would give more fans the chance to see Nitro racing at a local level.
- It would add an exciting type of car to Competition Eliminator.
- It would bring Nitro racing within the reach of more competitors.
- With its front engine it would appeal to the current interest in nostalgia drag racing.
The class (and cars) would resemble the A/FDs of the early 1970s. This would help keep the costs and effort equal to other cars and classes currently in Competition Eliminator.
The proposed rules could follow these general guidelines:
(The class requirements below are not meant to be set-in-stone, but are merely suggestions to be used as a starting point)
- Current A/ND chassis rules (front engine only)
- Individual stack fuel injection
- Zoomie headers
- Nitromethane fuel
- Spec fuel pump (Enderle 600 or Hilborn PG175 or ?)
- Iron or aluminum blocks
- Iron heads only
- Cubic inch limit of approx. 440
- 1400 pounds minimum weight
- 3.5 - 3.75 pounds-per-cube
- Any type 2 speed transmission
- 12 inch tires
We the undersigned believe that this class should become a part of NHRA's Competition Eliminator again. It would add excitement to the sport overall and renewed interest to Competition Eliminator. As fans we would enjoy seeing these cars again, as racers we would love the opportunity to compete in a Nitro class and as competitors in Comp Eliminator we believe it would be a boost to the entire eliminator bracket.
